Consumerism has become the great idol of our age. It has convinced us that our meaning and purpose is found in the ever increasing consumption of things, services and experiences. Our pursuit of vocation has become disconnected from our sense of purpose, we use our time and money on things that give us fleeting highs but sap us of lasting contentment, we feel paralysed by the innumerable choices open to us and yet disappointed by all the things we are missing out on. Consumerism continually tells us the good life is found through the ever expanding acquisition of more.
God tells us that the good life is found in Him. That first and foremost we are to be people that love Him with all our heart, soul and mind and love our neighbours as ourselves. As Christians we need to urgently remove the idol of consumerism and put God back in His rightful place. Doing so will have impacts on our sense of peace, our witness, on our discipleship, and on the world.
