Live Free Tip No. 1 – Screen Time



In his 2017 TED Talk, Psychologist Adam Alter spoke about how much time screens steal from us and how they’re getting away with it. He shares why all those hours you spend staring at your smartphone, tablet or computer might be making you miserable — and what you can do about it.



Adam Alter talks about Stopping Cues. These natural moments where we arrive at the end of the newspaper or have to wait a full week to see the next episode of a TV show have been lost in this new age of on-demand. What was once intuition has now become something we need to welcome back into our lives. Adam shares that one such Stopping Cue for him is that when it’s dinner time, his phone gets put in another room, out of reach entirely. This simple act prevents him from mindlessly scrolling and instead allows him to be present.



So what’s the practice?



We want to challenge you to do the same. For the next two weeks, when you sit down to dinner, put your phone in another room for atleast the duration of dinner (you’re welcome to make it longer if you want to stretch yourself).
